Who we are
Voices of Recovery Movement (“we”, “us”) is a community-led organisation based at Kimera Close Road, Ntinda, Kampala, Uganda. We support people and families affected by addiction, trauma and mental health challenges. We are responsible for the personal information collected through this website.
This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. It is written in line with the Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019 of Uganda and its regulations.
What we collect
We collect only what you choose to give us, and only what we need:
- Contact form. Your name, email address, the topic you choose and your message.
- Get involved form. Your first and last name, email address, phone number if you provide it, how you would like to be involved and any message you add.
- Story submissions. The name you choose to share, your story, and a photo if you decide to upload one. Photos are processed to remove hidden information such as location data before they are stored.
- Technical information. Like any website, our server records basic information such as your IP address, browser type and the pages requested. We use this only to keep the site secure and working.
Messages may include information about your health or someone else’s. We treat this as sensitive personal information and handle it with particular care.
How we use it
- To reply to your enquiry and offer the support you ask for.
- To process volunteer, mentoring and partnership applications.
- To review story submissions and, with your consent, publish them.
- To protect the website from spam and misuse.
We do not sell your information, and we never use it for advertising.
Lawful basis
We process your information because you have given consent by submitting a form, because it is needed to respond to a request you have made, or because we have a legitimate interest in keeping our services safe. We publish stories only with the consent you give when you submit them, and you may withdraw that consent at any time.
Who we share it with
Your information is seen only by members of our team who need it to help you. We may share information without your consent only where the law requires it, or where we believe someone’s life or safety is at serious risk.
We use a small number of trusted service providers to run this website, such as our hosting provider. They process information only on our instructions.
Cookies and third parties
We use a small number of essential cookies: a session cookie that protects our forms against misuse, and a cookie that remembers your cookie choice for six months. These are always on because the site cannot work safely without them.
With your permission, we may also use analytics cookies that tell us, in aggregate, how people find and use this site. We never use advertising cookies and never sell data. You can change your choice at any time using the Cookie settings link at the bottom of every page.
Some features rely on other services, each with its own privacy policy:
- Donorbox processes online donations. Payment details go directly to Donorbox and its payment partners and are never seen or stored by us.
- WhatsApp links open a conversation in WhatsApp, which is operated by Meta.
- Google Fonts and Google Maps load typefaces and the map on our contact page, which means your browser connects to Google’s servers.
How long we keep it
We keep messages and applications for as long as we need them to respond and to follow up, and in any case no longer than two years unless you remain actively involved with us. Published stories remain online until you ask us to remove them. Server logs are kept for a short period for security purposes.
Keeping it safe
The website uses encrypted connections, protected forms and restricted access to our administration area. Access to personal information is limited to the people who need it. No system is perfectly secure, but we review our safeguards regularly.
Your rights
Under the Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019, you have the right to:
- ask what personal information we hold about you and receive a copy;
- ask us to correct information that is wrong or incomplete;
- ask us to delete your information or remove a published story;
- object to how we use your information, or withdraw your consent.
To make a request, contact us using the details below. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Personal Data Protection Office of Uganda.
Children
Our forms are intended for people aged 18 and over. If you are younger and need support, please call us or ask a trusted adult to contact us with you.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top of the page shows when it last changed.
